Biography
Alexandros Yiorkadjis was born in Nicosia in 1981. From the age of 8 until 16, he attended art classes with the sculptor Christos Symeonidis. After graduating from Archangelos Lyceum in the field of graphic arts, he continued his studies at the Academy of Fine Arts in Perugia, specializing in sculpture.
After visiting academies in Rome, Milan, Florence, and Carrara, he chose to transfer to the Academy of Fine Arts in Bologna, where there were more workshops and space for research on new techniques and materials.
In 2006-2007, he participated in the Erasmus program at the Academy of Fine Arts in Marseille, France. Upon his return to Bologna, he held his first solo exhibition at the Art Synergy gallery, supported by the Academy of Fine Arts in Bologna as an official parallel event within the Art Fair of Bologna. That same year, he was nominated for and won the first national sculpture prize (premio nazionale delle arti) with his work “conflitto,” which is exhibited at the Ministry of University of Italy in Rome. Alongside his studies, he participated in various exhibitions such as “TinaB,” The Prague Contemporary Art Festival in the Czech Republic, “Imagina Arte,” the 10th Art Fair in Reggio Emilia (Italy), “Umano,” the International Film Festival Human Rights Night 9th Edition in Bologna, “Stile Libero Italiano” at Studio D’Arte Cannaviello Milano, and others.
In 2011, he graduated with honours from the Academy of Fine Arts in Bologna, and his thesis research “Documento Essere Umano,” with the sculpture “Documento,” was selected among the sculptors who graduated in the last 10 years from the Academy. It was exhibited at the 54th International Art Exhibition at the Venice Biennale, “State of the Arts,” Academies of Fine Arts at the Arsenale, Tesse di San Cristoforo.
He continued to live and work in Bologna, participating in exhibitions and cultural events in Italy and Germany. In 2013, upon his return to Cyprus, he held his first solo exhibition at the Alpha C.K. Gallery. In 2014, he was invited to participate in the solo exhibition “Harmony and Contrast” at the sculpture museum “Il Cassero per la Scultura Italiana dell’ottocento e del novecento,” curated by the museum director, an academic and art historian specializing in sculpture, Alfonso Panzetta.
Among other exhibitions, in 2015, he participated in the International Design Exhibition “Salone del mobile” in Milan with the Barbara Frigerio gallery. In 2016, he took part in the Art Athens International Art Exhibition with the Alpha C.K. Gallery and in a group exhibition at the Minima Gallery in Mykonos, with which he still collaborates. In 2018, he participated in the 16th International Architecture Exhibition at the Venice Biennale in the Cypriot Pavilion, “I am where you are,” as well as in the first Biennale of Larnaca, where he won the first prize.
His works can be found in the collections of the Ministry of University of Italy in Rome, the Central Bank of Cyprus, the Cyprus Telecommunications Authority, the American Heart Institute, and private collections in Italy, Romania, Hungary, Albania, Berlin, Colombia, and Cyprus. One of Alexandros’s main themes is human existence and the evolution of consciousness.
