Giuseppe Wulz nasce a Cave del Predil nel 1843 ma si trasferisce a Trieste nel 1851. Nel 1866 inizia a lavorare come apprendista presso lo studio del fotografo Wilhelm Friedrich Engel , chiamato a Trieste dal Lloyd austriaco. Nel 1868 apre uno studio, insieme a un altro allievo di Engel, Luigi Boccalini, in piazza della Borsa 10, dal nome “Allievi di G. Engel G. Wulz e L. Boccalini. Nel gennaio 1875 inaugura lo Stabilimento fotografico G. Wulz – Allievo di G. Engel – Corso 9, dirimpetto all’Aquila Nera-Trieste, come è indicato sul retro di molte sue fotografie. Qui resta fino al 1890 , espone le fotografie in vetrina. Dal 1891 Giuseppe apre uno studio a Palazzo Hirschl in Corso Italia n. 19, nell’attuale Galleria Rossoni, dove proseguiranno l’attività, prima il figlio Carlo , e poi le nipoti Wanda e Marion. Lo studio è pubblicizzato nei giornali dell’epoca in questo modo: Io sottoscritto partecipo a questo rispettabile Pubblico d’aver aperto il mio Nuovo Stabilimento Fotografico situato nel ben noto Palazzo Hirschel in Corso Numero 19 piano secondo. I locali vastissimi si presentano comodi al Pubblico tanto per la posizione centrica che per la gran comodità della magnifica scala. Lusingandomi di venir onorato da numerosa clientela, mi segno devotissimo G. Wulz fotografo.
Sviluppa un’intensa attività, in particolare di ritrattista. È amico di vari personaggi della scena culturale triestina. Il suo atelier diviene un punto di incontro-cenacolo. La sua attività di fotografo è al servizio di un pubblico eterogeneo. Oltre al ritratto, Giuseppe Wulz documenta lo sviluppo della città, letta attraverso il porto, le rive, le vedute dal mare. Non mancano le panoramiche commerciali, come le immagini di Miramare, vendute anche in forma di stereoscopia. Solo il primogenito Carlo proseguirà l’attività paterna (il figlio Guglielmo lavora solo per un breve periodo presso lo studio). Giuseppe cede l’attività al figlio nel 1914 e muore il 15 marzo 1918.
Giuseppe Wulz was born in Cave del Predil in 1843 but moved to Trieste in 1851. In 1866 he began working as an apprentice at the

From 1891 Giuseppe opened a studio in Palazzo Hirschl in Corso Italia n. 19, in the current Galleria Rossoni, where the activity was continued first by his son Carlo, and then by his granddaughters Wanda and
Marion. The studio was advertised in the newspapers of the time in this way: I, the undersigned, participate in this respectable
public of having opened my New Photographic Establishment located in the well-known Palazzo Hirschel in Corso Number
19 on the second floor. The vast premises are comfortable to the public both for their central position and for the great comfort of
the magnificent staircase. I flatter myself with being honored by numerous customers, I am a very devoted photographer to G.
Wulz.
He develops an intense activity, particularly as a portraitist. He is a friend of various figures on the Trieste cultural scene. His atelier becomes a meeting point-cenacle. His activity as a photographer is at the service of a heterogeneous audience. In addition to the
portrait, Giuseppe Wulz documents the development of the city, seen through the port, the banks, the views from the sea.
There is no shortage of commercial panoramas, such as the images of Miramare, also sold in stereoscopy form. Only the eldest
son Carlo will continue his father’s business (his son Guglielmo only works for a short period at the studio). Giuseppe handed over
the business to his son in 1914 and died on 15 March 1918.
